From the independences, Mali adopted a policy of valuation of the traditional medicine (MT), in agreement with the indications in this direction of the WHO. In front of the endemic disease of the malaria, the Department of Traditional Medicine (DMT) of the National Institute of Research in Public health (INRSP) of the Ministry of Health leads researches on the resources of the MT for the development of Traditional Improved Medicines (MTA) for the care of the malaria. The first researches of the DMT ended in the launch on the market of Malarial 5 ®, a mixture of three plants Cassia occidentalis L. (Caesalpinaceae); Lippia chevalieri Moldenke (Verbenaceae) and Spilanthes oleracea Jacq (Asteraceae). The experimental studies allowed to demonstrate the beneficial effects of Malarial when clinical signs associated to the presence of Plasmodium appear. The research for plants more effective againts malaria on Plasmodium allowed to list and to estimate the other plants
In the process of research for a new malaria phyto-medicine, inquiries with the houseworks and the Traditional practitioners of health (TPS), succeeded to identify Argemone mexicana L., (Papaveraceae) as effective for the treatment of the malaria. The in vitro studies demonstrated an inhibitive activity of extracts methanolic and dichloro-methane of the leaves from the growth of Plasmodium falciparum, with inhibitive concentrations 50 %, (IC50) understood between 1.00 and 1,22 µg / ml mexicana. Studies of toxicity demonstrated a safety of use of the mixture without the seeds of Argemone mexicana. Clinical trials allowed to confirm the efficiency of the mixture without the seeds of Argemone mexicana in the care of the simple malaria. For a better use of Argemone mexicana, a new phyto-medicine under the name of "SOUMAFURA, TIEMOKO BENGALY" was finalized in the form of herb tea and of syrup.
In conclusion, it is evident that the African traditional pharmacopoeia can make a important contribution for the discovery of safe, effective phyto-medicines, quality for the care of the malaria.
